Week 3 - Technology in the Classroom
Watch the Technology youtubes on the left. We viewed some of these videos in class but some of them we did not. Please make sure that you have viewed each video either in class or through the blog. Reflect upon what you saw. What are your thoughts about technology in the classroom? How could the Amazon Kindle change typical textbooks in the future? Please share an example of how a teacher effectively or ineffectively utilized technology in the classroom.

I think technology in the classroom is great, if it is used in the right way. It is important that a teacher uses technology in a way that still allows the students to learn new things and allows the teacher to still teach efficiently. I had a teacher in high school that would always give us quizzes to review for a test by using the clickers that were talked about in one of the videos. It was a really fun way for us to learn the information and also allowed us to be interactive in the classroom. I think the Amazon Kindle is a great technology, but I don't know if it would be efficient for students in a classroom. While it would be great to eliminate the hassle of textbooks, what if all the textbooks aren't available on the Kindle? That becomes a problem for students. I think textbooks are still efficent for now, but there is always a possibility that the Kindle could eventually make textbooks obsolete.
ReplyDeletei really don't know how i feel about technology in the class room.... i feel like having a computer class would be good but using computers in every class would be a lot of money and be distracting to students and have problems. i do see the some of the positive things with having technology because that is our future. i don't really have past experience with technology in the class room. i didn't know about smartboards or anything intense like before today. the amazon kindle is different i think it would be hard to get kids to read a computer and not play games or something..... with reading like that kids can't highlight or make notes on the page like you would do with a normal book and with that what if there is a problem with the computer you would get excuses about not being able to read. so i don't think i would want to use that in my class.... and really why get rid of books?
ReplyDeleteI think technology in the class room is a must in our near future. Everything in our world today is starting to revolve around technology. Not only does it allow for us as teachers to put more information on, but it allows for the students to interact in class and not be bored by just sitting there. Amazon Kinde Could change typical text books in the near future because it allows for a wider variety of books right there in your hands, and also allows students to have a different form of a book thats not a paper back. I also like this Kindle becuase students wouldn't be able to surf the web while reading. They said that you can but it isn't set up to do so, this would make it easier to detect when students aren't reading. My Anatomy teacher used a clicker based quiz system in every class, sometimes multiple quizes. This allowed for the kids to participate in a different way, force them to pay attention because there were graded quizzes, and made it easier for the teacher to do attendence. Overall technology is a must in our near future, and I look forward to seeing how teachers utilize the technology.
ReplyDeleteKristina I strongly agree with most of your comments. It would get very expensive to have all that technology in your class. The good think about it is the school district would have to purchase this, making it easier on us teachers. The part I have a different opinion on is the Amazon Kindle. When I watched the video it sounded like to me that it would be hard for students to do anything other than read. He said the Kindle isn't set up for the internet, you can access it but it is very small and hard to get. This to me would make it easier to detect if a student is doing something other than reading.
ReplyDeleteI think that educators need to be wary of the use of technology in the classroom. I believe it can be an effective tool to reinforce information being taught; however, I do not believe classrooms should be completely run on technology teaching tactics alone. Everyone learns in a different way. Some students may learn better with the use of technology; others may be overwelmed by the constant motions, lights, and complications. Also, teachers need to be careful to use technology to their teaching affectiveness in that it should not just be a fun tool to excite students. For example, I had a Spanish teacher in high school who would open up class with a youtube video everyday (this is not directed at you, Mrs. Bishop). He would show us the most random videos about German fairytales, techno videos, and all types of random entertainment. While it was funny and interesting in the beginning, we sometimes spent all class looking at random videos and never learned any Spanish. He was too excited about the way Youtube worked, it was like he forgot he was a Spanish teacher.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the Amazon Kindle, I think it is such a cool tool to use for entertainment purposes. One of my literature teachers brought one in and was showing us how to use it, and I was amazed. Though some students may have difficulty adjusting to the complications of using an Amazon Kindle or become distracted more easily, it could be potentially very cost effective. If a student only purchased one Kindle for their entire high school and college career, the amount of money schools and students would save would likely be quite a bit. I think that education will see the use of the Kindle spread over the next few years.
Kristina...I do agree with your last comment wholeheartedly, "why get rid of books?" While the Amazon Kindle has the potential to be an effective tool, isn't it a little frightening to think that in twenty years, students may not even know what a library is? I think it is important to integrate technology and hands on learning practices.
ReplyDeleteAlly, I completely agree with you about not completely relying on technology in the classroom. Like you said, students may learn in different ways. It might not always be effective to use technology for that reason. Like you said, it is important that teachers use technology in the right way.
ReplyDeleteI believe that as long as the technology is being used for learning instead of any other way. Certain tools are good for the class: Smart Board, Amazon Kindle, and others. While things like Twitter would be more of a distraction than any way it could help.
ReplyDeletetechnology in the class is going to be a must with the younger generations. my concern about using technology in the classroom is with using facebook, myspace, and twitter i think those would just be too distracting to the students. the smartboard and google earth are fun tools that can engage the students in class. i remember in high school being able to use our teachers smart boards and it was a lot of fun and got me to pay attention in class. amazon kindle I am not so sure about I think it is a good idea but it would have to be modified. in the video he listed somethings that were wrong and need to be improved if those improvements were made and you could have access to all the book you needed i believe it would be a very useful tool.
ReplyDeleteandrew, my genetics teacher had us take our test and quizzes with clickers it was fun and it made me pay a lot more attention to what answer was selecting because if you click the wrong one its very difficult to go back and change it.
ReplyDeleteI think that technology in the classroom is absolutely essential in our society. We must teach students how to use the tools that they will be using in the future today. If they are not taught how to use technology for academic purpose, they will not be able to use it for academic purpose. The technology we have created is far to valuable to be used only as a source of entertainment. Using things such as the internet, smartboards, twitter, and the kindle in the classroom, we will not only be able to teach the students how to use this technology for the better, but we will be able to teach more efficiently.
ReplyDeleteI went to a high school where every student had a laptop and every room had a smartboard, and I believe that when this technology was being used correctly, it greatly improved my learning experience.
In Junior lYear I took a course called American Studies, and we used technology to its fullest potential every day. We did research on the internet, did powerpoints, made websites, etc. These experiences allowed me to access so much more information and explore so much, I don't think that the class would have been the same without it.
In Freshman year, I took a spanish class where the teacher did not use technology in the proper manner. She would send out an assignment at the start of class, and she told us to finish it. She really never taught. Technology should not be a substitute for a teacher, it should be a tool used by a teacher.
In response to Kristina's post, I don't believe that the idea of fully integrating technology is that every student has their own computer during class. The teacher uses tools like the smartboard, which is great because it has so many interactive tools for education on it. I agree with you that it would be far too expensive to have twenty to thirty computers in each classroom, it's just not possible for most schools. Just having some of these tools in the classroom, like one smartboard, is so valuable, because not only does it provide new ways to learn, it exposes the students to the use of technology for educational purposes. These are the tools that students will be using the rest of their lives. They need to get acquainted with them.
ReplyDeleteI think using technology in the classroom is important. Teachers prepare students for the future, the future is technology. But I think students and teachers should still have one on ones, as well as students with each other. Everyone is so wrapped up in im-ing, texting, emailing, etc...can people still communicate in person? I love being able to text and get my thoughts across instantly, but I believe verbal communication is important along with technology. I love to see advances and more tech integrated into the classroom, but I hate to see other life skills, like communicating, lost. I think amazon kindle would be nice because its less bulk. You wouldn't have to carry around multiple books. But I kind of hate the fact that we would be losing the skills to look things up. In a book you have to find where something is, and read through to get what you need. Would amazon kindle just hand you what you're looking for? Will people still know what table of contents are? I know the amazon kindle just holds the book information but still, that is not like a book, its more like the internet in a way. I see pros and cons. I think it definately would be easier, but easier is not always better.
ReplyDeleteIn high school I took contemporary issues. We used a lot of available technology. We researched online all the time, made powerpoints, made dvds, used the smart board, blogged, created websites and so on. It was neat doing all of our work on the computer, and being able to save everything on the computer and not have to transport things to and from the classroom.
Another teacher I had in highschool hardly ever communicated with us verbally. She did not pass out books or assignments. We were expected to do and follow everything online. I didnt like the class so much because it wasnt personable at all. I didnt feel like i could have a real conversation with my teacher. Sure, it was nice to get my work and be done, but sometimes its nice to be able to talk.
The thing I am worried about most is the idea of technology taking over different jobs and people relying too much on it. I do see the many possitive benefits of having technology in the classroom though. Things like the Amazon Kindle and Smartboards offer much more interactive learning capabilities. I personally don't have much experience with technology in the classroom like the smatboards and such, but I do know that without an overhead it would have been more difficult to do charts and other visual learning things. This just kinda shows how technology continuously is becoming more and more powerful.
ReplyDeletei think I will have a healthy balance of technological and traditional ways of teaching when I get in the classroom.
To what Mike Belaska said about technology in every class; thats freakin sweet! I wish I would have had the capabilities you did. Can you tell the difference between a student who has had the technological education like you and someone who doesn't?
ReplyDeletetechnology in the classroom is always going to be a controversial issue for teachers everywhere. personally, i think that it is a wonderful idea! the generation that we will have the privalege to teach in the near future are growing up with so much more technology than we had when we were younger. we need to embrace it and utilize it to be effective teachers. things like smart boards, you tube, facebook, and many other social networking sites can enhance a lesson when used the correct way. you cant let technology become a crutch or distraction, there are still many basics of teaching that technology can never change.for example, i observed one of my high school teachers today and she used the smart board for many parts of her lesson, like important notes and the class agenda but she didnt let it get in the way of her communication and discipline while teaching. there are however some things i dont agree with in terms of technology in the classroom, like amazon kindle. i really dont think that technology should ever replace textbooks. plus, it would be really expensive for students. we live in an ever changing society and as teachers, we need to cotinue adapting and changing with it in order to adapt to our students capabilities and customs.
ReplyDeletein response to technology taking the place of jobs, i have thought about that too. although this is a common concern, i think there are some jobs that can never be replaced by technology.it would take away from communication in many jobs. you can only communicate with a computer or robot ot a certain extent! i know one things for sure, technology will never replace teachers!
ReplyDeleteTo start off, I was homeschooled since the first grade so I don't really know of any teachers that used technology in the classroom. I did however take some dual-enrollment college courses here at LU and one of my teachers used the computer to show us pccommon and where to turn our papers in and stuff like that. but other than that, I have not had experience with technology in the classroom. I will say it outright. I am very weary of it. This nation has become so tech-savvy in the recent years. In some ways its good and some ways not so much. Yes, we can get to answers faster and communicate better. But is that all good? I really don't know. I am trying to think a lot about this myself. I will be a music teacher, and I will prolly not be using technology in my classroom... The music teachers I know, do not use it. However, I do not know what i will think at the end of this class. :)
ReplyDeleteTo what Kenny said, I thought about this in class as we were watching the videos. A single question plagued me - Will technology eventually eliminate the need to be taught by actual human teachers? That is a scary thought and I know that Nicole commented on that as well. But what are online courses? Classes you take online right? You are taking the course without a teacher. You learn the curriculum thru the computer and its sources. If people find that students work best interacting with a computer, why not have all students come to class daily and do all their own classes online? I'm sure the people who put together the programs would find all kinds of ways to entertain the students since everyone needs to be entertained these days. :p I'm not trying to be pessimistic, don't get me wrong. I am just trying to be realistic. Everything changes these days. We live in a society that needs to be updated, modernized. We have changed in the way of teaching, technology, etc., since the beginning of schools. So are we just gonna stay put right where we are now? I don't think so. But I hope in the end, whether we use it or not, that it was for the students' best interest. Cause that's what it's all about, right? - Peace out.
Laura,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing that you were homeschooled. You bring such a wealth of different experiences than most of us...I look forward to hearing more about your schooling.
Let me clarify for you about online classes. Online classes still have an instructor. You just don't have to physically go to class. Some online instructors skype with the students (online conferencing with people using a small camera on the computer) Some instructors post their videotaped lectures on the computer. Many instructors will assign readings and then have online class discussions about the article (kind of like what we are doing here on the blog.) I once taught an online class and I really missed the physical interaction with students. BUT I think one can learn online and I think it is becoming more and more popular. It allows students who may not be able to attend class to still learn the material. Let's talk about this in class next week.
Thank you Mrs. Bishop for clarifying! I am glad to know that online classes have teachers as well! Looking forward to tuesday.
ReplyDeleteI think using technology in the classroom is kind of inevitable in the future. I do consider the smartboard to be an awesome idea, it engages kids and I bet even us as teacher will have more fun teaching a lesson!
ReplyDeleteStill, I think that going as far as having each student bring laptops to class doesn't sound like a very good idea. It would be way too distracting and expensive.
About the AmazonKindle, I think its a great idea in the sense that it would reduce the consumption of paper, but...I think I would still rather reading a BOOK. Even when I'm writing an essay I like printing off drafts and reading them, correcting them and such, reading off a screen isn't very comfortable I think.
In my high school in Honduras we didn't really use much technology IN class other than in our computer class (and we never really did anything out of the ordinary or creative) so I can't really think of examples of how technology was used...
About the whole online classes topic...I guess it can be effective to those who use this resource because they really aren't able to go to class but are actually interested in taking a class and learning. I have seen too many times, though, how people take online courses just because they're believed to be easier... I know lots of people who have taken that online criminology class here in LU, for example, and I know for a fact they just take it because it's supposed to be a piece of cake, an easy way to get the credits out of the way and not worry about taking a serious class. Well, aren't we here to learn? If you take a class just for credits then you aren't really getting an education, so what are we here for?
ReplyDeleteI think sometimes technology facilitates mediocrity and lazyness...Still, it is also a great help for those who make good use of it. So I'm not against it being used...I'm just sort of against it being used in the wrong way.
I agree with what ally said about the technology being used efficently, and not just for excitement. I have also had a teacher that got more distracted with technology/computer than the students did. Sometimes being off topic and watching videos is great, but sometimes it can get frustrating. There needs to be a balance between fun and work.
ReplyDeleteWow, Technology has come a long way. From slate chalk boards to computerized, interactive screen. I believe that the use of technology can be a very essential tool in todays classroom and I have seen its benefits. In my daughters 4th grade class, they had the advantage of a smart board and computers at each desk. Their teacher taught many topics from these computers, having them read, spell, and hand in papers from them. She also taught them each how to do a power point presetation. It wasn't all about the tech stuff though. To do all of this, they went to the library, looked up their information on REAL life books, did hands on project, and interviewed REAL indivduals. For each project they had to have at least two different kinds of sources, not just the internet. She taught them through interesting and interactive lessons, with all of the technology that she had available, and it got them excited. From a parents point of view, I think thechnology is a wonderful tool to assist in preparing children for the future. As a teacher, I agree with that statement and add that kids are smarter today and will need more skills as they get older.
ReplyDeleteAs technology advances, we need to incorporate this technology in a healthy balance so that our students learn and are better prepare to decide their own futures.
I have to add to my own comment. I think that the use of the Amazon Kindle would be a wonderful tool if it is given as a choice. It has awsome features and I personally think it would be an essential tool for those who choose, but to completely do away with textbooks might be difficult for some and I apprecate the oppertunity to be able to flip through a book.
ReplyDeleteIt's me again. I wanted to add to the topic about the online classes, and this is for Florencia. It is sad that some use technology as a tool for laziness, especially in education. This is the one place that you can use it to get ahead. For the record, I have taken online clsses. It was a good thing I didn't think they would be a piece of cake. They were more challenging and it took more discipline on my part. It may have been the subject, but not all online courses are easy.
ReplyDeleteMelissa,
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear that you had a successful online class.
If anyone wants to take a few minutes to figure out how to post their picture on the comment I would greatly appreciate it. I have been working on it and can't figure it out. This is one of the annoying frustrations about working with technology - not being able to figure out how to make it do what you want!!!
i think technology in the classroom is a must. Children are now growing up with internet, cell phones, and many other new and fun ways for them to learn. some teachers need to update the way they teach so more students will feel more engaged in the classroom. In high school, all of my teachers had a smart board. We would always take notes on them and use them for different activities in class. I like the idea of amazon kindle but, i personally wouldnt like to use it. i completely agree with Kristina about her opinion of amazon kindle. Many students learn better by highlighting, taking notes, etc. But with Amazon Kindle it wouldn't be possible.
ReplyDeleteI, like most of the people posting so far, think that technology is a must for the future. Using it in the right way is definitely essential, especially when using it in the wrong way can mess things up for students. My high school had smartboards in a few classrooms. I was only ever in one of the classrooms with a smart board, and in each of the two classes we only used it once or twice, and generally used it to enlarge videos. Maybe it was just because my teachers didn't know how to use it effectively, but it was disappointing. In my opinion, it is important teachers need to be willing to know how to use it. Hopefully this will change as time goes on. As for Amazon Kindle, I think that it would be a good idea to allow it as an option. There’s always the chance that something needed wouldn’t be on the program, and the chance of getting a virus. People write malicious programs for everything, including calculators and cell phones. I’m sure that, if the Kindle becomes widely used or accepts public input, then someone would start writing some sort of malware. It wouldn’t stop people from using Kindle, of course, but it would certainly put a damper on its use and cause downtime for teachers and students. On a brighter note I do like the idea of that Promethean board. It seems more interactive than the Smartboard, but maybe that’s just because my teachers didn’t really know how to use it effectively.
ReplyDeleteto the online class thing... its a perfect example of being distracted. to take an online class you must be very organized and be able to do things on your own ya a lot of times its turn it in at some point but you know those people who wait till the last min. to kenny and computers and stuff taking over jobs... thats happening now. if you think about it computers are making computers. and as technology gets better there will be no use for us and everything will be done for us. crazy to think
ReplyDeleteokay i have been trying to work out the picture deal. i am now a "follower" of this blog now apparently lol. but thats all i can figure out. it just says my name and picture in the left hand column under "followers" but nothing will show up when i post a comment. weird. so thats all i can figure out so far. I will keep trying tho. oh, and i became a follower thru gmail... you can also do that thru AIM and something else.... i think. :)
ReplyDeleteLaura, I understand how you think that technology isn't all that prevalent in music classes. I myself am going to be a band director, and for a while I didn't think that technology really applied to my field. In reality, things like Smartboards can be used for any field. It could be used to introduce the notes of the scale or a new concept. For directing a band, there are things like SmartMusic. One of my previous band directors uses it all the time. With that program students can learn to their parts by playing along with songs from an ever-expanding library. The biggest issues is that not every song a band plays is on there. Still, I found the program to be helpful. It is your accompanist and tutor. It comes with a microphone, and if you want it to it will let you know which notes and rhythms and notes were correct and which notes were not. It even works for vocalists. I know my band director currently uses it to give his students assignments. They play, it records, and they send the record of their assessment to the director. My purpose in posting this isn't necessarily to correct you, but to hopefully get you to reconsider technology's usefulness in the field of music education.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sam! I appreciate that!
ReplyDeletehmmm this IS aggravating, Mrs. Bishop.... the only last thing I can think of is maybe there are some settings that need to be changed on this blog... like "enable pictures" or something. have you checked them? you prolly have but just to make sure...
ReplyDeleteI love technology, and I think that as a teacher we should use technology in order to prepare studens for their future. Because in the future they will have to be able to use technology in their jobs. We have te prepare them to face what they will have to use
ReplyDeleteI am agree with florencia about the online courses. I don't understand how people pretend to be ready for the future if they don't want to learn. They don't understand that everything that we learn here is going to be a powerfull tool in the future.
ReplyDeleteIn an out of the classroom technology will be used by our students. I believe that if we dont use technology in the class rooms such as the computers at our age it would have an effect on the child in the future because of how an what we use computers now days in our everyday life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Andrew but if our students in the future don't have what they need to move on and we worry about how expensive it is in the long run we could hurt there future.
ReplyDeleteI believe that technology in the classroom is good and effective especially if the teacher teaches it in a way that engages and captivates the students attention and teaches it so that every student will learn since children all have their perferred way of learning effectively. Some are visual, some verbal and some hands on or activity based. An example of how a teacher effectively used technology in the classroom is in this classroom how our teacher assigns us to post two blogs per week. Its good because alot of people especially young people now a days blog already or if they havent it teaches them how and gets them to think more
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kristina about online classes. it can be distracting and not keep you as focused as if being at an University and going to class and dealing with your professor face to face. Some people need that push and online classes would just push them to be more lazy and not pay attention
ReplyDeleteI think that technology in the classroom is revolutionary. The amazon kindle looks like it would be a great tool for kids in the future. To have unlimited textbooks available for students would be awesome. The first time i was introduced to a smart board was in 6th grade. Our teacher used it almost everyday and i think it was a great way to get kids introduced to technology.
ReplyDeletei agree with kristina in the fact that online classes will allow students to be come much more distracted. I think that online classes takes away from the whole learning experience in which someone with knowledge about the subject area is teaching you rather than just reading online.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is a good thing in the classroom, but it also can have a negative effect on the teacher. It could cause the teacher to become lazy, and complaisant. Kindle has many things that it could help, such as kids with learning disability's.
ReplyDeleteI concur with what jack said about technology is totally revolutionary in the classroom. Technology makes children learn faster, and makes children more involved with their own learning.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, the Kindle is an astonishing tool. I think that it would create a desire for anyone to read, just because of how cool it is.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to my opinion on technology in the class room; I think technology in any part of life has negatives and positives. Technology makes life easier for all, and in this sometimes causes laziness. That being said, I still believe that technology in the class room has so many more positives than negatives, that it is essential that every teacher incorporate it some how. Teachers need to know how, when, and where to use it.
Amazon Kindel could make it eaiser and possibly cheaper for everyone to have the textbooks they need. This would also create less to carry for students.
I had a math teacher that required us to make an email address for a project that we did. We had to use it to email our work to him via an attachment. It is a very simple thing to create an email address, but it made me more comfortable with attaching things in the future. This is something that is very helpful in college, and I still use the email address today.
I agree with Jack that an online class can take away from the "classroom experience", but in addition I also think that taking a couple of online classes in your lifetime could be helpful. It is a different learning experience, and diversity is often times helpful in learning.
ReplyDeleteI think in today's world, technology in the classroom is essential, but with this new influx of technology comes extra responsibilities for teachers. Teachers must constantly monitor their students to make sure the students aren't abusing their technological privileges. I believe computers should be used in classrooms for research and that educational games can be very helpful study aides for students, but I don't think every student should have a computer to themself. If the students have computers at their desks, chances are most of them will be doing anything but using the computer for educational purposes. I had a teacher in high school who let my class go to the computer lab every day to do research for a semester long research paper, but most kids abused that privilege and wasted the time they had in the computer lab and didn't do their paper until the week it was due. A lot of learning could have been done in that wasted time. I think technology and personal communication should have a healthy balance in the classroom. Students need to learn to communicate with others face to face to make it in the real world. I also agree with the earlier posts that said using an Amazon kindle would make text books and libraries obsolete. It think it would be sad to live in a world with no actual books.
ReplyDeleteI think that technology in classrooms are a great thing but also, could lead to classroom destruction and also would rid our students of some great learning skills. I agree with Kristina and Emily and all those who were against having virtual books. Why would we get rid of books? That is the stupidest thing I could ever think to do. The kids already spend so much time on computers at home. They know how to navigate through almost any electronic device. I don't see how the Kindle would help our kids learn. Now going to the library where you have to search and use the dewey and depending upon the subject problem solve as to where you would be able to find it... why take that away? This kindle is just making it easier on them... they search a subject and look for the cached words and then go after a book after the machine has told them that that book is what they are looking for. They don't have to do any thinking at all, where at the library you need to read a bit and see if that's the right one before you go check it out. I don't like the idea of the kindle at all. However with other technology it could make learning better and more involved with student and teacher. I think the smart board is a great investment, you can do so much with it on a fun and educational level. The latest edition of smart boards are amazing and continue to dazzle me with the latest and greatest in its components. I think it brings technology and education together. I don't think computer in the classroom is a good idea because it is always to watch the teacher to see it they are watching you and then go web browsing. I think that televisions and DVDs and all that good stuff is good. I don't know. I just think that with a lot of technology you end up taking the imagination and true thoughts of the kids away. I don't want kids to think my class is an easy "A". I don't want them to leave thinking there's no real work cause it's on a computer. I want them to earn it all and then feel good when they've accomplished it and not just did what they usually do when they get home, it's just a bit different... I don't like that at all.
ReplyDeletei believe that kids need what they need when it comes to their education, so if it's technology that will work the most effectively, then us as future teachers should use it. i believe that because computers are so useful and effective, eventually, there will be no need for a teacher, but for a robot. i think thatcomputers will be all that we need to educate kids. i think that they will eventually not care what a person has to say if they can hear or read it from a computer or ipod. my senior year, my english teacher assigned us to listen to podcasts in the class and i learned a whole lot from it. i was intrigued by the fact that we didnt have to listen to the same old voice of the teacher and we got to use ipods in class. i think that technology will be a great advancement in our teaching.
ReplyDeleteto what kenny said, i agree with the concern about technology taking over the classroom. technology has already taken over so many thing, and who knows what else it will take over.
ReplyDeleteI saw many things that i like and didnt like and things that i belive in and dont belive in. i think there are many benefits with technolgy but i completly disagree with facebook and myspace in the classroom i think its a major distraction and and takes away from normal communication like the telephone which everyone has forgotten about.however, some technology is good like smartboards and videos. I had a teacher in highschool that did both and it helped alot and was very effective.
ReplyDeletealso jeff and kenny i agree with you in saying that it has taken over so many things in the classroom
ReplyDeleteTechnology in the classroom can be used as a great tool to enhance learning. However, it can also put a hinge on it. I think showing videos and the use of smartboards in classes I have been in have helped me better understand lessons the teacher is going over. As far as the videos and the use of Amazon Kindle, I'm a little iffy about. Idealy it sounds like a good idea and a way to lower the number of text books; but students learn in so many different ways. For example, I like to have a text book that i can read and hold in my hands. I also like being able to highlight and make little side notes.
ReplyDeleteJeff, I thought you made some interesting points. However, the one thing I have to disagree on is how you think a robot would be better at teaching students. I think person to person interaction is extrememly important.
