Week 5 - Your LU Program

One of my goals for you this semester is that you become familiar with the Lindenwood School of Education and what you can expect over the next 4 years of your life. In order to do this, you need to be very familiar with the Lindenwood website, and in particular, the School of Education section of the website. The following link should take you to the School of Education section of the website. http://www.lindenwood.edu/academics/education/ Please browse the site and find something new that you either didn't know before or that you didn't know was on the website. You only have to post one reply this week. It is not necessary that you reply to a classmate. HOWEVER, you must find something on the website that is different than what the previous posts have indicated. Here are a few things to remember while you are looking for information: 1. It must be related to either Education or your Secondary Field of Study. 2. It can be a form you found on the Guide to Undergraduate Teacher Education, but you must specify what the form is about and when you would use it. 3. It can be something about Student Teaching, but be specific about what you learned. 4. It can be something about Foliotek, but be specific about what you learned. 5. It can be something about CBASE or Praxis, but be specific about what you learned. 6. You will not submit information about a form that another student has already posted.

You may also find something that will help you with your LU program on PCCommon in the School of Education Folder.  You can either use something found on PCCommon or on the LU website for your blog comment.

See you guys next week!

  1. What I found most interesting about the education department and Lindenwood is the fact that foliotek has to be purchased by the individual student, and the fact that it has to be completed before student teaching can begin. I attented Missouri Western State University before Lindenwood, MWSU supplied you with you portfolio and was free of charge. Of course this was good because it was free, but by it being free, there didn't seem to be much security behind it. After going through the process of foliotek, I felt better about my information because it felt like it would be more protected. Secondly I like the fact that You have to complete your portfolio before student teaching because it places the responsibility on the student to get things done in an orderly fasion. At MWSU it didn't have to be finished untill you graduated, and alot of students were behind and had alot of pressure on them to re-create everything.

  2. I learned that the Student Teaching process has a detailed application process that a student has to go through before they can actually begin to student teach. Some examples of things that need to be turned in are an application, a philosophy of education paper, CBASE and Praxis test rseults, and letters of reccomendation. Student Teaching seems like it is a long process and I can now understand why a person wouldn't want to take any other classes while they are doing their student teaching. Reading about the student teaching process now makes me feel very overwhelmed, but I know as I continue in my education classes I will be well prepared for it.

  3. Something new I learned is that the Higher Education Department approved for Lindenwood to offer a Doctorate program in 2007 and it is the first Doctorate program ever offered at Lindenwood. This is good information for me to know and other students as well.

  4. One thing I learned from exploring the Lindenwood website was that there are helpful links to teaching websites for lesson plan ideas and aids. I did not know that the Lindenwood website provided these links to websites such as Teacher's Tools. I think that's an awesome aid for students to use in the Education program especially when one is getting prepared to do their student teaching.

  5. One thing I learned from looking around this website was that there are a couple different sights in which you can create a resume and post it on their website for different job openings in the state of Missouri. This is a very good idea i think because this is a much easier and more convenient way to find job openings that you are interested in. Also i think this is important because everyone knows that the economy hasn't been very good in the past couple of months so by having this, it makes things easier when looking for a job.

  6. I learned from the Education portion of the website that there were links that can be very helpful to people when trying to become a teacher. There is a link that takes you to the Missouri elementary and secondary education website that can be helpful to me because i would like to be a teacher in Missouri. Also that teaching requires much more paper work than i expected. I was aware it required a lot but there is much more than i thought.

  7. Hey, guys! One of the things I really like about this week's blog assignment is that everyone must read all of the blogs just to make sure you don't repeat someone else. Those of you who post early might miss out on some excellent website finds. You might want to check back early next week to read about what everyone else found.

Anna, I just learned something from you about the website I didn't even know was there. I am going to go check it out. And by the way, thanks for sharing your hilarious story on Tuesday. I shared it with my other classes - they got a kick out of it. Teaching is never dull!

  10. I found a list of Grants, Loans, and Scholarships on the Helpful Websites section. This would be very helpful for anyone who requires help financially with their tuition or anything else.

  12. On the 'Department Announcements' page, I found information on 'Beginning Teachers' workshops to be held at LU. Those sound like something I would be interested in doing in the future. I also liked how the page outlined a lot of important deadlines for the Education Department, like student teaching, CBASE, PRAXIS, and graduation deadlines. That is very helpful:)

  14. I learned that physical education area offers 4 different majors... and that besides my major I can get a minor in coaching. that it is great! because after my graduation I will have more job varieties if i have my major plus the minor.

  16. I never knew about most of the things that are covered in this class are posted on this webstie and if we needed any help in the way we can see our selves teaching we can come here to look at the requirements an what all we need to do. Further more I took a good look at the Code of Ethics again because of our hours in a school we will have to participate in and I learned a few things from this list.

  17. I found a list of all the Education contact and advisors for my specific content area. I didn't know who my education advisor should be if my major was Social Science, now that I do know I will be able to contact him!

  18. I thought it was kind of cool how the site showed the different cbase test dates. I found out when the test was, where it was, and what I needed. I thought this was very beneficial.

  21. Under the helpful links section of the site, I found a site that shows the job outlook and average salary by state. I found this helpful because it shows me what jobs are currently in demand in Missouri and other states. For example, it says that in Missouri there is a shortage in vocal music. For me this means that getting my degree with vocal endorsement might come in handy.

  24. What i learned from the website is that there are top job placement and that will be helpful when looking for a job. Being a highly regarded accredited program is going to look very good on a application for getting a job.

  25. I like that the website displays the eleven standards of teacher education on most of the pages. I had never seen that in print on any of my LU documents, so now I know where to find it! I think the standards set give education students a good idea of the qualities they will need to possess and work on before they become teachers.

  26. I found it very interesting that even as a School of Education there are counselors available to help with really any personal problems/concerns! That really lets me know how much LU truly cares about her students! Things I saw were counceling options for very common problems such as being anxious about tests, having trouble with managing time, and adjusting to the college lifestyle. There were also areas that related more closely and personally with the individual students who may have troubles such as drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, and sexual abuse or mistreatment. These things were pretty surprising to me only because I was not aware of them. I think LU is very dedicated to her students' success and to making sure that each student, no matter what the trouble may be, has a place to go for guidance!

  28. I found and am quite happy about the fact that I only have to take math concepts and possibly geometry to aquire my degree. Everywhere else it seems I have to, with no getting around it, take (DUN Dun dun) College Algebra or higher. I'm ridiculously excited about it. I know math is my down fall and it has since I was a kid, but there are a few things that I'm not so bad at with math and geometry and concepts are among those things. Oh happy day!
